A small medieval village
The Borgo was built to accommodate farmers, craftsmen and pilgrims, and its structure still has the character of a small medieval village rather than a single house.
The apartments have independent entrances and are connected by stone paths and walkways that link the different parts of the Borgo with the paths running through the garden. These routes converge naturally in the shared courtyard, where the old stone oven recalls its former role in community bread-making.
Over the last fifty years, the restoration of the Borgo has combined conservation with the creation of new spaces and functions. Former stables and areas once used for animals have been transformed into large common spaces, while preserving the original materials, proportions and spatial relationships.
At the same time, the Borgo has continued to evolve in response to new social and cultural needs. New spaces were introduced for physical wellbeing and collective activities: the pool, the small amphitheatre and the gallery are part of this development, together with the pergola and the outdoor areas created by extending the terraces into the slope.
The result is an organic relationship between medieval structure, careful restoration and contemporary planning, with spaces designed to support social, cultural and creative initiatives as part of the everyday life of the Borgo.
